Net Zero - The Economic Opportunity Of The 21st Century?

February 9, 2023

Essex County Council shared news with us about a new Government review, led by former energy minister, Chris Skidmore, which cites net zero as the "economic opportunity of the 21st century."

ECC commented:

The Mission Zero: Independent Review of Net Zero is split into two parts, explaining the benefits of achieving net zero in the first section and then making recommendations on how to achieve this across six pillars in the second. The recommendations offer guidance on how the UK can deliver on its net zero commitment.

One of these pillars looks at how we unlock local action by reforming the relationship between local and central government.  The Review recognises that 30% of the greenhouse gas emissions reductions that are needed to deliver the Net Zero Strategy rely on local authority involvement, with 82% of emissions being within local authorities’ scope of influence.

Other recommendations in the report include a call for an increase in solar panels with a ‘rooftop revolution’, working towards gas free homes by 2035 and more onshore wind.

Tackling climate change is a top priority for Essex County Council, and the environment has been identified as one of four key areas of focus in Everyone’s Essex strategy. The Council recently also published its first Annual Climate Action Report, which tracks the county’s ongoing progress when it comes to achieving net zero by 2050.

A Climate Advice Pack for businesses in Essex has been developed for support in reducing carbon footprints, with hints and tips which can also help tackle the cost-of-living crisis.
